Tongue Tie and Lip Ties for Infants and Adults in
Brandon, MS

What Are Tongue and Lip Ties?

A tongue-tie, also known as ankyloglossia, is an excessive soft-tissue adhesion on the underside of the tongue. This may result in restriction of tongue movement or position, depending on the severity. In infants, it can lead to breastfeeding difficulties, while in adults, it might contribute to speech problems, jaw alignment issues, and more.

A lip tie refers to a similar condition in which the upper lip is attached too tightly to the gums, often affecting breastfeeding in infants and potentially leading to gum recession and other dental concerns in adults.

How do we treat tongue and lip ties?

At Burke Dental Group, we have years of experience treating both tongue and lip ties using a Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Laser for the most comfortable and effective procedure. This modern laser treatment offers minimal discomfort, less bleeding, and quicker healing time compared to traditional methods. We provide treatment for infants up to six months of age without requiring general anesthesia or sedation.

What are the benefits of CO2 laser treatment?

CO2 laser treatment offers several benefits, including:

  • Minimal bleeding – The laser seals blood vessels during the procedure, reducing the risk of bleeding.
  • Quick recovery – Patients typically experience a faster recovery time compared to traditional surgical methods.
  • Less discomfort – The laser causes less pain and trauma to the tissues, making it more comfortable than other methods.
  • Precision – The laser allows for precise cutting with minimal risk of damaging surrounding tissues.

Do treatments hurt?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. Infants typically feel only mild pressure, and the CO2 laser treatment is designed to be as gentle as possible. Some tenderness or irritation in the treated area may occur after the procedure, but it is usually temporary and resolves quickly. Adults may experience mild discomfort during recovery, but pain is usually manageable with over-the-counter medication.

What is the recovery time?

Recovery time is typically quick. Most infants and children recover within a few days, with some showing improvement immediately after the procedure. The treated area may be slightly sore for a short period. For adults, recovery might take a bit longer, with some experiencing tenderness for a few days. We provide post-treatment care instructions to ensure a smooth recovery and may schedule follow-up visits to check progress.
